Nominations are now open for new trustees to join the BSA Board of Trustees.
We are now seeking applications for two Publications Trustees and one Membership Services Trustee to join the BSA Board of Trustees. Please note that candidates can apply for multiple positions but, if elected, may take up a role for only one position.
The Board is a supportive and collegial community. Trustees work closely with each other and the dedicated staff team to welcome, support and nurture members and the discipline. They are kept up-to-date on all the latest policy developments and changes affecting the discipline (e.g. REF, Open Access). There are opportunities to contribute to the BSA Annual Conference, study groups, publications strategy, government consultation responses and the policies and strategic direction of the Association. In short, the role of a BSA Trustee is a very responsible position within your national subject association; it is a great opportunity to be an active voice in shaping the future of the discipline and a notable achievement on any sociologist’s CV.
Trustees focus on four main areas of business – governance, publications, public engagement and membership services (including our annual conference) – and all trustees are expected to be active in one of these areas and prepared to commit to several hours per month where necessary. It is essential that nominees have the capacity to fully commit to the role, including attending required meetings and participating actively in all Board business, including their designated area.
Trustees are expected to attend four Board meetings a year and two Advisory Forum meetings with representatives from each constituency within the BSA. Meetings are usually held on Fridays and most will be virtual, thus requiring limited travel. Additional short meetings to work with Board colleagues and BSA staff should also be expected.
The first Board meeting for newly elected Trustees will be an in-person meeting which will be held at the BSA meeting room in London in June 2025. All reasonable expenses (including travel and accommodation) are recoverable in accordance with the BSA Expenses Policy.
Any UK-based member may apply for Trusteeship, regardless of career stage or experience. Having a variety of voices and experiences is of benefit to the Association. The Trustees seek to achieve a good balance of people in key positions with respect to equality and diversity and request that members are mindful of this when nominating.
The Board is particularly keen to increase the inclusion of minoritised groups amongst the trustees.
