We are delighted to announce that Professor Liz Stanley, of the University of Edinburgh, has been awarded the Distinguished Service to British Sociology Award for 2020.

“It is difficult to imagine anyone more worthy of this award than Prof Liz Stanley. For over 40 years, she has been at the cutting edge of sociological research. From her early work, with Sue Wise, in the late 1970s, through to her most recent work on memory and commemoration in South Africa, Liz has made invaluable contributions to our sociological toolkit. Her pioneering work on feminism, narratives, autobiography and archival methods have pushed the boundaries of sociological research. I am delighted that she has won this prestigious award.” said Louise Ryan, Professor of Sociology, University of Sheffield and BSA vice-chair of trustees.

On receiving the award, Professor Stanley said, “The BSA has been an important presence throughout my academic career and I’m thrilled and honoured to be given its Distinguished Service Award for 2020, joining previous recipients who I admire greatly. Thank you.”

The Distinguished Service panel are delighted to confer this prestigious award to Liz.
